How Pilates is Beneficial for Scoliosis/Kyphosis

We are often asked by our clients “What is the best fitness program for me if I have scoliosis?”
There is an overwhelming number of fitness programs that are available to us today and it could be challenging to peruse and determine the best fit your needs! At PhysioElements, we encourage our clients to choose a fitness program that will motivate you to move your body everyday and allow you to practice body awareness. Our personal favorite as a team is The Pilates Method!
What is Pilates ?
The Pilates Method is an extensive full-body exercise conditioning system developed by Joseph Pilates during the early 20th century. It is a combination of using body weight and spring tension resistance to strengthen your entire body. It has gained popularity in the fitness space today and has been a form of rehabilitation in physical therapy office and cross-conditioning in the professional athletic space!
How is Pilates beneficial for Scoliosis?
At PhysioElements, all of our clinicians are trained in Pilates and in scoliosis specific-methods such as the Schroth Method. As scoliosis-specific practitioners we find that there is overlap between scoliosis – specific and Pilates methodologies.
Pilates can help your scoliosis by :

Where can I start?
If you are a beginner, you can learn Pilates through 1:1 Private Lessons or group classes with a certified Pilates teacher. We recommend working with a Pilates instructor who has specialized training and current evidence-based knowledge around working with scoliosis. We also recommend working with any board-certified physical therapists who is extensively trained in scoliosis-specific interventions such as the Schroth Method and Pilates.
