Pilates Exercise Dissection: Spine Twist Supine

Spine Twist in Supine is an exercise that is commonly performed in yoga and mat pilates classes. It is also a very popular movement in many youtube fitness videos or at home fitness DVDs. But while many people and some inexperienced instructors treat this solely as a stretch, physical therapists and certified pilates instructors know the true goal of this exercise.

Goal:

Spine Twist in Supine (supine meaning on your back) was designed for the oblique muscles to be strengthened in a lengthened position, and not only stretched. This exercise can act as a stretch, but the main purpose is focused on the stabilization of your core and strengthening of your obliques.

Common Mistake:

Many people try and make this about twisting and stretching their lower backs, which is done by separating the knees and simply overstretching from one area to the other. However, since the main goal of this is stabilization and strength, the knees should be kept together and leveled throughout the movement in order to facilitate proper alignment. Oftentimes you’ll see people unable to keep the knees leveled as they go into the twist, affecting their lumbar spine (lower back). It is the thoracic spine (upper back) that should be rotating, allowing the obliques to be lengthened and strengthened.

It’s the beginning of the year!! Everyone may have goals that they are still working on this year or have set new goals for the year. Dr. Carson does these 3 preparatory exercises daily as she works toward conquering one of her goals; handstand! Whether you’ve never tried getting upside-down, or you’ve been practicing for years, you can benefit from these 3 simple exercises!

1️⃣ Plank   Down Dog
This exercise will build the core stability required for handstand. Start in plank with shoulders stacked over hands and feet in line with hips. Pull your belly button into your spine and allow this to press your hips to the ceiling. Return to plank, and repeat 10 times.

2️⃣ Down Dog Scap Push-up
This exercise will build the shoulder stability required for handstand. Start in Dog Dog with your shoulders relaxed. Press down firmly into your hands to reach your hips further towards the ceiling. Return to start position with shoulders relaxed away from ears, and repeat 10 times.

3️⃣ L-hold Against Wall
This exercise helps you find your balance and courage while upside down! 🔄 Place your hands a leg length away from the wall. Place one foot on wall, followed by the other. Hold this position for 30 seconds. For an extra challenge, play around with lifting one leg from the wall at a time.
